Lose Weight on the Dukan Diet

One of the diets that is becoming quite popular on the weight loss horizon is the Dukan Diet. Developed by Dr. Pierre Dukan, MD, this diet’s claim is that after you complete the initial phases, you will be in a position where you can eat anything you like for the rest of your life. The diet was made popular recently when some publications claimed that the duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, lost weight on the Dukan diet before her wedding to Prince William.

The first phase of the diet is called the attack phase. In the attack phase you you are restricted to lean meat. You can eat all you want of lean protein (excluding lamb and pork) plus 1.5 tablespoons of oat bran. Turkey, fish, chicken, eggs, and cottage cheese are some of the protein choices that are allowed. You must drink a lot of water, 1.5 liters is recommended.

Phase 2 is the cruise phase. In the course of the cruise phase, beyond just the lean and low-fat protein you can add supplemental foods. Unlimited amounts of vegetables is allowed, mostly green vegetables–no carrots, potatoes, peas, or corn. At this time you can add 2 tablespoons of oat bran. While these are a little easier to digest, your body will still not be able to extract much in terms of caloric intake, and can still need to work hard, metabolically speaking.

Throughout the third phase, or the consolidation phase, along with the unlimited protein–you can have pork and lamb in this phase–you are allowed one piece of fruit, two slices of whole-grain bread, and a portion of hard cheese. You are also allowed 1-two servings of starchy foods and one to two meals in which you are able to eat whatever you want. These are termed “celebration meals.” While other of these meals are easier to digest and absorb, your body’s metabolism continues to be sped up so much that the other foods don’t really pose a challenge in regards to weight gain.

Throughout the last phase, the stabilization phase, the plan relaxes, and you can eat what you like. The only rule is that you must eat lean meat for one day of each week and try to eat high fat foods cautiously. If you do this your metabolism will be at peak levels, and allow your body to sustain during the other days of the week.

This is an incredibly complicated plan to follow. As in other low carbohydrate diets, you will have to look out for possible constipation – especially during the first phase when you don’t take in any fiber. To help with this you should drink as much water as you can. Also, the very strict diet can be challenging in the first phase.
